There are a variety of specializations in public relations (PR). No matter what your interest may be, there is a niche for you. As you grow in the PR industry you will eventually develop a niche.
It is better to be a master of one than a jack of all trades.
The options are limitless: music, sports, tech, film, book, fashion, beauty, and lifestyle are a few of your options. When I first started I decided I wanted to be a lifestyle publicist even that title in itself encompasses sub niches. But, guess what? It stuck with me. Clients typically come to me for their beauty and lifestyle projects.
Start with One Niche
Pick one area and then expand later. I had to start somewhere. Imagine how many contacts I would need in order to have clients in all the previously mentioned fields?
Weight Out The Pros & Cons
You should also consider the pros and cons of each field. For example in Beauty PR, sending out samples is a large part of your job. If running to the post office or sticking on labels makes you cringe, then you may want to pass on Beauty PR.
Consider The Knowledge Required
Also specific niches requires specialized knowledge. So if you know nothing about football and the terms associated with those sports, sports PR may not be for you. Of course, you can learn as you go on, but I recommend starting with your interests in your personal life.
