Finding the right client can be quite the challenge, especially when you're new in the the PR game. It's taken me years, and I'm still working on it! As I learn more about my likes and dislikes, I've discovered that taking on the right project or client is very close to dating. Here's a few reason as to why:
This is the foundation of every relationship, especially in business. Find out how you and your client can communicate effectively. Here are some examples of effective communication:
- Monthly/Weekly Recaps
- Follow Up Calls
If you and your client are not communicating effectively, this should be a red flag. Texting all the time is not effective communication. Set up a time to speak to your clients at the minimum monthly, and send recaps. Gauge how often your clients like to be updated. Personally I speak to my clients a few days a week at the minimum.
A lot of clients think that they hire a publicist and that's it. Wrong! A client has to work with you to fulfill their public relations goals. You can secure all the press interviews for a client you want, but you can't do the interview for them!
The work of a publicist is behind the scenes, so your client has to trust that you are working on their behalf to get the exposure that they want. As a publicist, you also have to trust your client because they are a representation of you. You have to trust that they will show up on time to what ever it is that your set up for them.
Take the time to get to know your client. I can tell you about each one of my clients. Their likes, dislikes, and the opportunities that are a best fit for their brands.
Finding the right client is an ongoing process that takes time. The best way to set your client up for success is to set expectations.
